Introducing the “Accounta-Bella Buddy” System

New Year's “Accounta-Bella Buddy” system

A dynamic duo, typically friends or colleagues, who attend our dance classes together and have developed a regular routine of connecting & celebrating through dance!

With 2016 right around the corner and New Year’s Fitness Resolutions in tow, there are some important factors to take into consideration for long-term success.

If there were a way to double your chances of fitness success, would you be interested? How about a technique to make exercise more fun? A tool that automatically creates space and time in your busy schedule for workouts? A proven way to help you out of a rut or through a plateau?

It may all sound too good to be true, but countless fitness seekers have found that the right workout buddy, or what we call your “Accounta-Bella Buddy,” can do all that and more! Dance buddies can help you stay committed to your fitness goals AND have fun. Here are just a few of the benefits you will find by teaming up with that partner in crime, and WHY it works!

Dance buddies in Denver
Caitlin & Rhonda from BDD

Accountability

You’re far more likely to actually work out when (1) you’re forced to schedule it ahead of time, and (2) canceling means inconveniencing a friend. Making concrete plans with another person means you’ll be far less likely to cancel in favor of the couch. This is the whole idea behind the “Accounta-Bella Buddy” system!

Motivation

In addition to keeping you accountable, friends can provide an extra boost of motivation when it gets tough. Everyone has those days when they just don’t feel like going to the studio, and when they want to call it quits, friends can offer encouragement to keep you going. Just be sure to return the favor!

Learn Something Wild & New!

Gyms can get repetitive and stagnant, so why not burn even more calories while challenging your brain and connecting with others? At Bella Diva Dance there are over 7 different styles & genres of world dance classes to keep you stimulated and busting a move!

Have More Fun

Having fun while dancing

Those who have hit the gym or fitness routine with friends know that it’s usually more enjoyable than going alone, and several studies have reached that conclusion too. One study in particular surveyed 117 people using their phones to ask what they were doing, who they were with, where they were, how they were feeling and more. The results suggest that people enjoy physical activity more when they’re with their friends.

Workout Longer

Time flies when you’re having fun…or at least when you are distracted! Having someone to chat and laugh with between glutes squeezes, lets you focus on something other than just your workout, making the time go by faster.

Interpersonal Support

The need for interpersonal support is primal, says Wayne Andersen, MD, cofounder and medical director of Take Shape for Life, a nationwide health and lifestyle coaching program based in Owings Mills, Md: “We are social animals. We seek the company and positive reinforcemDancing with friendsent of others, especially when we are doing work.”

Also, exercise partners provide a powerful combination of support, accountability, motivation and, in some cases, healthy competition. “They can play the role of teammate, co-coach and cheerleader — all while working out,”  says Michelle P. Maidenberg, PhD, MPH, clinical director of Westchester Group Works in Harrison, N.Y.

A few other fun benefits!

  • You have someone to text the next day about post-workout pains, because no one else will understand why you’re limping in the office!
  • You have someone to eat with after surviving samba, because we are dancers who eat! Chipotle? Yes, please!
  • You will look a lot less crazy if you can get your friend to do it with you.

How to Be a Fab ‘Accounta-Bella’ Buddy!

Build your active partnership with thoughtful acts of support like these:

  • Be in touch. Send reminder texts or emails, prearrange rides to the studio, offer wake-up calls if necessary.
  • Be on time. Always.
  • Push your partner, then reinforce her efforts with praise.
  • Suggest new ideas and routines to keep things interesting and prevent plateaus.
  • Remind your partner of her goals and encourage her when the going gets rough.
  • Keep tabs on each other through illness, travel and other routine-breakers. It will make it easier to get back on track.
  • Talk about topics other than fitness. The more you care about your partner as a person, the stronger your alliance will be. But don’t wallow in negative talk. It’s an energy downer!
  • Be flexible. Sitter canceled? Take turns watching the kids so each of you can exercise independently.

Coconout Oil Popcorn

Microwave popcorn not only contains a lot of chemicals for the flavoring, how it’s packed and color, but also it contains bad trans fats that we should avoid as much as possible. Once you do this once, you won’t buy another bag of microwave popcorn. It’s super easy and delicious! Melt enough coconut oil in a stove pot so that it covers the corn kennels.

Avocado butter

Personally, I can’t get enough of avocados. A friend of mine said it was like eating butter. And indeed, it’s characteristics are similar as both are fats and have nearly the same consistency at room temperature. There are some recipes that use avocado to make amazing fudge brownies and other delicious desserts or sauces. Here’s an easy and delicious avocado brownie recipe and also a black bean brownie one!

Other alternatives to regular white flour

One of the things we need to get rid of are the white powders: white flour, white refined sugar and salt. We constantly abuse of these and one of the best way to avoid them is substituting them. When baking, switch white flour to any of the many great options. You can now find flour made from almonds, nut flours, coconut flour, or even wheat flour, much better than white one.

Aerobic Exercises

Need help on starting to detoxify your body?

If you didn’t have one, it’s time to get started. One of the best ways to get begin is to complete a detox program and include healthy tips into your daily routine. Detoxifying your body
Looking for a healthier lifestyle? A good place to start is detoxifying your body.

Tips to help your body detox

Hydrate and flush out toxins

We can’t get enough of water. It’s comprehensive; water is the major component in our bodies, about 75%. Extra salt, sugar, and alcohol can dehydrate your body. Start the day with a tall glass of lukewarm water with lemon or a warm cup of tea. Try to drink up to 100 ounces to flush everything out. Incorporate Green Tea into your diet. This is a powerful antioxidant source that will get you get rid of free radicals. We recommend drinking 2 to 3 cups a day. Another recommended tea is Dandelion Root Tea, as it focuses on liver detoxification.

Exercise

No wonder this little (sometimes dreaded) fellow keeps showing up in on our lists. Exercising is definitely the best thing for your overall physical and emotional states. The term “sweat it out” exists for a reason. Sweat is one of the best mechanisms the body has to get rid of toxins. Working out hard will make you sweat out those toxins and also increase the levels of endorphins in your blood. These will make you feel energized and help you keep up the good detox work.

Sleep like a baby

Sleep is one of the most important things you can do to regenerate and restart your body. Make sure you get back to your normal sleeping cycles, to get your body back to its regular circadian rhythm. Try to sleep for 8 to 10 hours at a minimum. Go to bed early, in a dark room with no distractions. That means no TV, no phone, no computer and also as little everyday stress as possible. Try to leave your work worries at work, and to go to bed as light-minded as possible. Meditation, exercising, yoga, laughing and enjoying your favorite hobby will help you relieve stress. Your body will be forever grateful with good night sleep.

Healthy eating Food for the heart

There is no magic trick, it all comes down to what we eat. We are what we eat. Many powerful green juices will help you detoxify your body. These juices usually include greens like celery, cucumber, spinach and fruit like lemons, apples, and pineapple. These are vitamin filled potent detoxifiers that will get your liver and kidneys a boost. Add to your diet other green veggies, lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains. If this is a life defining moment for you, then start gradually. Learn quick, easy recipes, fall in love with your local green smoothie store, do whatever but do it!

So yeah, basically the list above is a list of health musts. Adding these powerful practices to your post-vacation life will help you feel better and more energized. Incorporating these things into your daily routine will provide you a healthier lifestyle along with many long-run benefits. Till it happens to you: Violence against women

In the last month, Lady Gaga released one of her recent videos: “Till it happens to you” (a video that contains strong content, we recommend parents supervision). The video addresses a current common issue that can horrify any parent: rape and sexual assault in colleges. This is one of the many artists that uses her voice to speak up about issues that affect us all. Violence against women is a more common crime than what people usually think.

Violence against women is considered a gender based hate crime, pandemic even. According to former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, at least one out of every three women in the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or abused in her lifetime, with the abuser usually someone known to her. These are not isolated acts that only occur in poor communities where women are sexuality mutilated and experience brutality. Violence occurs in every country in the world.

Unite to End Violence Against Women

In 2008, the United Nations Secretary-General launched a campaign to put an end to this centuries old practice: Unite to End Violence Against Women. The campaign aims to raise public awareness and increase political will and resources for preventing and ending all forms of violence against women and girls in all parts of the world. The UNiTE campaign is working to mobilize individuals and communities. In addition to supporting the longstanding efforts of women’s and civil society organizations, the campaign is actively engaging with men, young people, celebrities, artists, sports personalities, private sector and many more. The current Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, states: “Break the silence. When you witness violence against women and girls, do not sit back. Act“.

One Billion Rising dance flash mob in Denver

One Billion Rising Revolution

Another campaign that is trying to increase awareness and displays public manifestations is One Billion Rising Revolution organization. One Billion Rising Campaign is the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history. The campaign, launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. On 14 February 2013, people across the world came together to express their outrage, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women. On 14 February 2015, millions of activists in over 200 countries gathered to Rise for REVOLUTION.

It’s essential that women, girls, boys and men unite in one voice and support campaigns like these. Take action by sharing information on social networks and making donations. Don’t be indifferent. Read more about One Billion Rising Campaign and its activism this year. Read more about flash mobs and some cool facts.
