Fight depression with dance

Freestyle dancing

Dance has been known as a performing artistic form that has existed for centuries of human history. But the powers of dance are more extensive than people really know. Alternative treatments to fight physical and mental illnesses are more popular every day. Dance or move therapy are options that can drastically improve a person’s state of mind. Today we share details on how dance can help fight depression.

How dance helps fight depression

Depression has always been considered as one of the most common mood disorders, but many still continue to look at it as a temporary state of mind. People who suffer from depression have difficulty in acknowledging this and have trouble reaching out to others and, eventually, getting started on a treatment, https://www.opaortho.com/valium-treatment-anxiety/. Even though it is a real medical disorder, there is much taboo behind it and myths that prevent us from getting the help we really need. Once a person has been diagnosed and is getting help, including Dance and movement therapy could help drastically.

Dance therapy helps because it promotes two important things: Nsihita_dance2

Exercise to fight depression

Even 15 minutes of exercise can give you a strong dose of endorphins to help you feel better and energized. People who suffer from depression don’t feel like moving much.

But once you get started, it won’t take long to notice a difference in your mood.

Dance helps you relax, making your stress levels go down. Scientists have also found that moving to the rhythm of a song can bring peace of mind, which is considered as a meditation technique.

Express yourself to fight depression

Depressed people may have their creativity and sense of fun blocked. By dancing you’re getting the creativity within flowing and also helps you loosen up positive emotions. Dance increases self-expression and helps people connect with themselves and others. When dancing, you will also experience laughter and fun. Laughter helps lighten your mood as well.

Great stretching exercises for dancers

Runner’s stretch

This is one of the most commonly practiced stretches for the lower body. Step your right foot forward and lower into a lunge position, placing your hands on the floor. If you can’t reach, use cushions or blocks. Inhale and as you exhale straighten your right leg.
https://www.parkviewortho.com/wp-content/languages/new/sildenafil.html

Return to starting position, and repeat 3 to 4 times. Switch legs.

Standing side stretch

Stand with your feet together and your arms raised over your head. Join hands and intertwine your fingers. As you inhale, reach upwards. As you exhale, bend sideways and hold that position for 3-4 breaths. Return to center and switch sides.

Butterfly stretch

Sit on the floor, with your feet flat against the ground. Let your knees fall to your sides and press your feet together. Slowly, pull your heels towards you without causing discomfort. By keeping a good back posture, smoothly bounce your knees up and down slow. This will loosen the muscles of your groin and inner thigh. You can add more pressure by pressing down slightly with your elbows.

Standing thigh stretch

Standing with your legs together, pull one of your feet up towards your back and grab with the hand of that same side. Make sure your knees are side by side, parallel. Keep your back straight and to help you with balance engage your abs.

Breathe in 3-4 times and then switch sides.

Announcing our newest class offering for 2016!

Intro to Middle Eastern Drumming
Thursdays 5:30-6:30 PM: starting Feb. 4th

Register online

Theo 3

Expand your awareness of rhythm, sequence, sound, and synchronicity, and learn to drum for belly-dancers! If you are already a dancer, deepen your understanding of musicality by studying the origins of the beats that move you!

image (2)In this class, students will learn ancient rhythms from the cradle of civilization, rhythms that are still heard on the radio today. These rhythms persist because connect to our early human roots, as natural as a heart beat. The drum inspires hope, movement, empathy, and visceral urges, which all lead to DANCING. You will learn to impart joy when you share this music, more so by co-creating rhythms within a group of your classmates at Bella Diva Dance.

The course will cover the Basics of Arabic Drumming. Students will learn how to play basic sounds on the Doumbek and drill specific rhythms to continuously improve in speed and sound quality. Bella Diva will provide Doumbeks to play in class, but eventually, you are encouraged to have a drum of your own so you can practice at home!

Students will learn the most common Middle-Eastern rhythms and their variations including Baladi, Masmoudi, Malfuf, Saidi, Maksoum, Ayoub, and Chiftitelli. We will also learn how to hold a Turkish-style jam session in a group and eventually perform as an ensemble to accompany belly dancers!

Meet the Instructor: Theo Drama

Theo 1

Theo is an experienced group facilitator and teacher: a founding leader of Denver Drum and Dance, math tutor/teacher, and private Doumbek lesson instructor. He is also a performer who has appeared playing the Doumbek at Cervantes Otherside in Denver and across the Front Range. Theo spent years shaping his musicianship, starting with piano at five-years-old. After his parents moved his family to Austria when he was six, they would bring young Theo to the symphony, sometimes to see his father conduct.

Back in the US, as a teenager, Theo kept learning new instruments and spent six years in choruses at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. When Theo stumbled upon a video of Onur, a Turkish Doumbek drummer, he passionately resolved to reach for that kind of freedom of expression. Now for the last four years, Theo has been fervently training with the Doumbek. Theo has learned from several Doumbek masters and has studied with Raquy in person at her Darbuka camp in upstate New York.

Theo’s patient, people-loving personality makes him a natural teacher, and his belief that music is meaningless unless shared, fuels his drive to share his passion and love for this instrument.

PRESS RELEASE – One Billion Rising 2016

One Billion Rising Denver 2016

One Billion Rising Denver 2016It’s time once again to rise. This is a call to action, Denver!

In 2012, the U.N. came out with the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 of the women will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. That’s one billion women and girls on this planet. One Billion Rising was initiated in response and is to date the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history. The initial call to action launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, The following year February 14th, 2013, women and men across the world came together to express their outrage, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to targeted violence against women.

One Billion Rising 2016 Denver Capitol, Bella Diva dance studio organizes One Billion Rising demonstration at Denver Pavilion and Denver Capitol Building February 14, 2016

Last year, on V-Day 2015, millions of people in over 200 countries gathered to Rise for REVOLUTION, to change the paradigm, demand accountability, justice and systematic CHANGE. In 2016, the theme of Revolution continues with a call to focus on marginalized women and to bring national and international focus to their issues; to bring in new artistic energy; to amplify Revolution as a call for system change to end violence against women and girls; to call on people to rise for others, and not just for themselves.

For the past 3 years, Denver has been RISING as part of V-Day and One Billion Rising on February 14th at downtown on the 16th St. Mall, and then on the steps of the Capitol. Last year, over 200 Coloradoans participated and it is expected to surpass 300 this year. Our Denver revolution has several layers. Dance companies throughout the state will learn the same dance, one choreographed by renowned artist Debbie Allen, in solidarity with our sisters across the planet. A flash mob outside the Denver Pavilions will perform the One Billion Rising choreography, which will be filmed and uploaded to the international One Billion Rising website. Participants, including survivors of rape and abuse, will then march to the Colorado State Capitol, where we hold a rally and call to action. At the capitol, we speak to:

One Billion Rising Denver 2016

  • Amplify the Voices of Marginalized Women
  • Bring National and International Focus to Their Issues
  • Bring New Artistic Energy to Create This Possibility
  • Raise Other Issues That Have Not Been as Visible
  • Amplify REVOLUTION as a Call for System Change
  • Platform Voices That Have Not Been Heard Within Local Campaigns
  • Call on People to RISE FOR OTHERS
  • Call Upon People of Privilege to Rise for Those Who are Not
  • Create Synergy and Connection
  • Continue to Call for State Accountability and Justice
  • Keep Highlighting the Economic Context of Women
  • Remain INCLUSIVE, INTERSECTIONAL, and COMPREHENSIVE
  • Keep Connecting the BODY with REVOLUTION
  • Rise for Change and Equality

ESCALATE the REVOLUTION. Join us!

This year’s rally will also feature numerous non-profits, dedicated to women’s health and safety, who will have booths set up to connect victims with the assistance and support they need. We need the media to support this cause and spread the word. We rise in Denver to show determination in creating a new consciousness – one where violence will be resisted until it is unthinkable.

One Billion Rising, Rises Over Denver!

Rise Up To End Violence Against Women!

This year Bella Diva Dance is organizing the One Billion Rising rally and flash mob that will take place on Valentine’s Day February 14, 2016, in downtown Denver. So, what is One Billion Rising, and why is it so important?

“One Billion Rising”, is the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history.

The campaign, launched on Valentine’s Day of 2012, began a call to action. Based on the U.N.’s staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women will be beaten or raped in their lifetime, One Billion Rising seeks to end this tragedy. With the world population nearing 7 billion this adds up to 1 BILLION women and girls that will be victims of sexual assault during their lifetime.

One Billion Rising 2016 Denver Capitol, Bella Diva dance studio organizes One Billion Rising demonstration at Denver Pavilion and Denver Capitol Building February 14, 20162013 The Call To Action Begins: Dance To End Violence

On February 14, 2013, 2014, and 2015, people across the world came together to express their outrage, strike, dance and rise in defiance of the injustices women suffer and demanding an end at last to the violence against women. Events took place in over 200 countries where women men and youth came together to rise, release, and dance outside of court houses, police stations, government offices, school administration buildings, work places, sites of environmental injustices, military courts, embassies, places of worship, homes and many other public gathering places; places where women deserve to feel safe but too often do not.

Dancing is Release and Defiance

The campaign was covered widely in all corners of the world including, The New York Times, The Guardian, NPR, and many more. This year, in 2016, we are again rising for revolution. Dancing allows us to come back into our bodies, as individuals, groups, and the world.  It connects our feet to the earth and inspires us to move to her rhythms. It allows us to go further, to include everyone, to tap into a revolutionary and poetic energy. It invites us to take the lid off of the patriarchal container releasing more of our wisdom our self-love, our sexuality, our compassion, and fierceness. Dancing is defiance. It is joyous and raging. It is contagious and free, beyond corporate or state control.

Take the Dance Further

We have only begun to dance. This year we must continue to go much further. We must go all the way and make the change. We must escalate revolution.

One Billion Rising: Rise For Revolution 2016 is an escalation of the first three stages of our campaign “One Billion Rising For Justice”, and “One Billion Rising Revolution. “

We’ve danced, demanded justice; we’ve demanded changes.  This year we are radicalizing our actions, enlarging, deepening, expanding the revolution. We need to continue to right the ship of consciousness; be braver, bolder, more creative and determined with our actions.  And we need to focus on the most marginalized women and girls to bring about the true long lasting change.

One Billion Rising 2016 Denver Capitol, Bella Diva dance studio organizes One Billion Rising demonstration at Denver Pavilion and Denver Capitol Building February 14, 2016We invite you to join us in the One Billion Rising Revolution

OBR is a wonderful way to connect with other women in the community by taking action with deeds, not words. Please spread the word. Share this newsletter and know that YOU can make a difference.  We will be holding 2 special classes on 1/31 & 2/7 to teach the simple global choreography: “Break The Chain”, created by renowned choreographer Debbie Allen. We will be adding a world dance flare & invite other studio to add their own unique style. During these classes don’t forget to WEAR YOUR RED! At the end of both classes, we will record us dancing “Break The Chain” together, and then we will post it to the international One Billion Rising site and to the Bella Diva Dance website. So, let’s pack the studio on Sunday January 31, 2016, and February 7, 2016 both from 12:30-1:30 pm.

The cost of the class will be only $10.00 with all proceeds going directly to pay for city permits, food and drink for participants on V-Day, signs & posters, and advertising to produce this important event.

That’s not all!  Students who come to learn the dance during our two special classes will have the opportunity to perform the opening number at our “One Billion Rising” show at Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret Wednesday March 16th as we raise money for Verifica, a Colorado non-profit that works to eradicate the exploitation of women and children involved in marginalized communities.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR!
February 14, 2016,  1-4 p.m. Flash Mob at the Denver Pavilions at 1 PM followed by a march to the rally on the steps of the Capitol from 2:30-4:00 pm.

Numerous non-profits dedicated to the health & safety of women will also be present, having booths on the Capitol steps to connect with the community and offer their services.

New Year’s Resolution: Move Your Body

Exercise Dancing

The start of a new year gives us another opportunity to do those things we have been dreaming of. It’s important to make consciousness of our bodies, our overall state of health, the diet we eat and to include new goals in our resolutions that improve our well-being. The time to start taking care of yourself is now. Add exercise and physical activity to your 2016 resolutions. Today we share with you the importance of exercise and physical activity in our lives.

April 1

Physicians agree that exercising or working out at least 30 minutes daily will help you in every way possible. People are mostly concerned about their weight, and by doing this, you will help maintain your ideal weight. But there is more, exercise can give you energy, make you feel happier, boost your immune system, reduce the risk of diseases and more. Exercise has been recommended to fight depression and anxiety, for decades. Exercise make us release endorphins that create feelings of happiness and euphoria. By controlling our weight, we also improve our self-confidence and boost our self-esteem, promoting a positive self-image. Some illnesses can be inherited, even though you live a healthy lifestyle. Working out on a regular basis will help you prevent and alleviate these diseases.

What should I do to start moving today?

Dust off your sneakers and start with a simple hike, walk around your neighborhood or go for a run/jog. Pick up that sport or hobby you had left aside because you were too busy or some other excuse. If you don’t have one, learn today: bicycle, swim, do yoga, pilates, go to the gym, take group classes, join a climbing club; the options are many. Dance is an ancient art that has been practiced for centuries. There are many forms of dance from around the world that might spark what you’re looking for. Read more about our World Dance Lessons.
