How to Prepare for a Great Dance Audition

Tips for a great dance audition

Rest is Best

Although it’s normal to be anxious the night before, make sure you get enough sleep. Take a hot bath, drink some tea, read a book – whatever gets you relaxed so you can catch some Zs and wake up energized.

Fuel Your Body

We know those butterflies can shut down your stomach, but it still is very important for you to eat a good breakfast. Make smart food choices and try to eat it early enough so that you don’t feel heavy when you arrive for your audition. Don’t forget to bring some snacks!

Dress the Part

You want to look nice, but you also want to wear something appropriate. Pick a comfy and flattering outfit that shows your personality and makes you stand out in the crowd. Don’t overdo it, though. In the end, your dancing should do most of the talking.

Early Bird

Make sure you arrive with time to spare so you have a chance to warm up properly before they call you in. This will also give you ease of mind. You don’t want the stress of being late to get in the way of your dancing.

Do You!

The most important thing to remember is to be yourself. Don’t worry so much about what other dancers are doing. Let your personality shine through, dance your heart out, and HAVE FUN!

Ready. Set. Dance!

How To: The Ballerina Bun

As dancers, sometimes we want to have a hairstyle that will keep our hair away from our face and movements during practice. Here are all the steps and tips you need to know to sculpt a ballerina bun right before class.

ballerina bun

Step 1: Start by spritzing your hair with a little water. If your hair is freshly washed and silky smooth, then you can give a texturizing spray a try to give the hair some hold and make it easier to style.

Step 2: Use a comb or brush to pull hair into a ponytail. The perfect height is at the crown of the head.

You should be able to see the top of the bun when you’re facing the mirror straight on. This creates a diagonal upward swoop, giving the illusion of a longer neck. Secure with elastic.

Step 3: Twist the ponytail into a rope and begin pinning around the elastic until you reach the end of your ponytail. To get a true ballerina bun, U-shaped pins are the way to go — they hold more hair and are easier to use than traditional bobby pins. Tuck loose ends under the bun and use a pin to secure.

Step 4: Finish off with a light-to-medium hold hairspray. If you wish to add some shine to your hair, then also use a glossy shine spray. This will give you cinnamon bun-like highlighted hair.

If you have very thick hair, then try the two-piece bun method so you don’t end up with a loose bun. To do this, divide the ponytail into two sections. Start the twisting and pinning process with one section and leave the other section hanging down. Once you twist and pin halfway around the elastic, start the process with the other section, continuing the twisting and pinning pattern until all the loose ends have been tucked under and secured.

  • Be on time for class

It’s important to always warm-up and properly stretch before a class. Be on time to your class so you don’t miss this first part. The more you stretch the more flexible you will become. As you do this, your moves will look effortless and more natural. Try stretching on a daily basis to help you loosen yourself and make your legs more limber.

  • Use the mirror and watch videos belladivadance_homepageslide04.jpg

The mirror is there for you to see yourself and help you catch what you’re doing right and wrong. Seeing yourself in the mirror while practicing will help you be more aware of your moves and how to improve when told to do so. Watching other dancers, in videos, is also great to learn more about body alignment, posture and technique.

  • Seek professional guidance

The first step to learning how to dance in a correct and responsible way would be to attend a good dance school. Experienced dancers know the importance of having a good dance instructor as they will help you by correcting mistakes and also by pushing you to give your best effort always!

  • Relax and enjoy yourself!

Remember that dancing is a way of expressing yourself and of liberation. Always breathe, clear your mind when dancing and try to get yourself into the state of dancing as much as possible.
