Follow these tips to prepare for your first dance performance, and you will have a smooth transition from practice and rehearsal to showcasing your talents on a stage in front of an audience.  

Mental Preparation

To help learn the dance moves, visualize the performance and movements wherever you go. Have the music with you and listen to it repeatedly. Listen to it in the car, on walks, and while doing other activities. 

Practice

In addition to dance practices in the studio, you’ll need to practice the routine on your own as well. Practice until you know the routine so well that it’s nearly automatic. The more you practice, the more comfortable you’ll be on stage and the fewer nerves you’ll have.

Practice in Costume

It’s not enough just to know the dance moves. You need to be comfortable on stage, which means being comfortable in your costume. Practicing repeatedly while wearing the costume that you’ll be wearing on stage can help with this.

Costumes are a big part of world dance performances, and they have a big presence. Practicing in your costume means you won’t get lost. You wear the costume; the costume doesn’t wear you.

Besides, the clothing is the shoes. World dances are performed with all types of footwear, from bare feet to heels. Make sure you practice in whatever shoes you’ll wear on stage, and not just for the dress rehearsals.

See the Stage Before the Performance 

Go to the venue and check it out. Get a sense of how big the audience will be and see what the stage looks like. If you can, stand on the stage and look out into the auditorium so that you won’t be overwhelmed when the lights go up for your performance.

Make a checklist of everything you’ll need on the day of the performance. This will help you to stay organized and prepared. By being prepared, you will have less to be concerned with and will be better able to focus on your performance. The checklist should include all parts of your costume, your makeup, and anything else you may need before, during, or after the performance.

It’s time to change the perception that dance is only for girls. Dancing is gender-neutral. It’s time we started encouraging boys to dance. Our kid’s classes make no distinction between boys and girls, and encourage everyone to join and learn the excitement and fun of dance from a young age, at a time when no one is concerned with gender. Hopefully, these are lessons that our kids will carry with them into their lives and help shape a future where gender is irrelevant. How Parents Can Encourage Boys to Dance

The best way to encourage boys to dance is to not discourage boys to dance. We need to get out of our own outdated way of thinking and simply encourage our kids to do the things that they love or show interest in, whether it’s dance, soccer, horseback riding, or space. If your son shows an interest in dance, encourage that interest without bias.

Get together with some other parents and enroll your boys together in a dance class. That way, your child won’t be the only boy in the class, and they won’t feel singled out. If you want to check it out first, see if you can sit in on a dance class.

The biggest worry is forgetting the choreography and getting lost. We’ve got a few tips for dancers on how to remember the choreography and have a great performance.

Tips on How to Remember the Choreography

Besides practice, practice, practice there are some tricks and tips that a dancer can incorporate to help remember the choreography for a live dance performance or showcase.

Chunking

One way to remember the choreography for your dance performance is to use a method called chunking. That is where you break up the routine into smaller chunks. Then you work on learning and memorizing each chunk. Once you have each part down, string them all together. 

Remember the Choreography
It’s natural for any dancer to feel some nerves on the day of a performance. Look to your fellow dancers if you get lost in the choreography, and let the music and the rhythm be your guide.

We do this naturally as we learn a dance. We break it up into sections and practice a little at a time. When you practice at home, keep practicing little chunks at a time. It’s a good way to solidify each section into your muscle memory.

Feel the Music

Dancing is done to music. So use the music to remember your parts. You can use parts of the song as cues to remind you which part comes next. That can work by connecting the parts of the song to parts of the choreography, like a slow part, fast part, chorus, verse, etc. 

Naming Each Move

Naming the moves can also help. Instead of counting through the steps or beats in a 1-2-3-4 pattern, give each beat a name, such as slide, push, dip, and so on. In a sense, this is how to remember the choreography by talking your way through it as you go through the moves.
