Benefits of yoga for dancers

Vinyasa yoga is a discipline that utilizes postures and breathing techniques. It is a sequential movement that interlinks postures to form a continuous flow. Because of this, it is also known as flow yoga. The basic concept of this type of yoga is to perform the postures in a smooth way in which the poses run together and become like a dance. Breathing is essential to perform these poses, as the instructor will indicate when to move to a different pose on an inhale or exhale. Vinyasa has a sanskrit word root that means “connection”, which can then be interpreted as a connection between movement and breath.

Vinyasa Yoga origin

Vinyasa originated from Hatha yoga. Modern Vinyasa flow yoga (also known as power yoga and flow) is best described as freestyle Ashtanga as it doesn’t adhere to the rigid structure of Ashtanga set out by K. Pattabhi Jois. Ashtanga can be traced back to 200BC. Ashtanga yoga, as well as many other types of yoga in the world, owe its roots to yogi Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (1888-1989); who saved traditional yoga from oblivion and created the basis for our present-day yoga practices. He was given a place to teach yoga and eventually taught a young boy named Parrabhi Jois his learnings on the power of breathing. Jois then established an institute for practicing the specific form of Vinyasa yoga. It was first in 1964 that a Belgian visited Jois and then published a book, which led to Jois’s name becoming popular. In 1973, Norman Allen, was the first American to be taught by Jois. Other people started joining this movement, and quickly the knowledge of Jois and Krishnamacharya became popular in the Western hemisphere.
