Learn the art of expression through the ancient classical Indian dance form – Bharat Natyam

Nishta_dance1The word Bharat Natyam is a combination of Bhav (Expression), Raag (Melody), Taala (Rhythm) and Natyam (Dance). As per Natyashastra (ancient Indian treatise on Bharat Natyam), this dance form combines the three forms:
Natya (dance drama),
Nritta (pure dance movements) and
Nritya (combination of sentiment and mood)

The dance form includes graceful movements of the body in an artistic and elegant way. Its origin can be traced back to Tamil Nadu and mainly performed in temples in the ancient days.

New Bella Diva Dance Bharat Natyam Instructor: Nishita Laliwala

Nishita Laliwala has been a Bharat Natyam dancer for the past 20 years. An art form which initially started as a hobby, turned into passion. The style of Bharat Natyam followed will be the Nalanda form. Nishita has over 5 years of teaching experience in India. She has completed her Visharad Purna (graduation) at a reputed Institute based in India (Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal) popularizing Indian classical dance and music since 1939.

Nsihita_dance2For the past 10 years, Nishita has been performing for her dance teacher once every two years. This is a part of the bi annual stage shows conducted for all the students. She has compered for the shows as well. She has performed at various theaters in Mumbai, including National Centre for the Performing Arts, Chembur Fine Arts Society, Y B Chavan Centre.

Nishita is an avid reader who loves outdoor activities like hiking, biking and camping. New cuisines are always worth a try and she enjoys trying and cooking them too. Movies, music and dances all interest her equally. Accounting is her mainstream career and she’s looking forward to working towards her goal in that field as well.

Bollywood encompasses a whole universe. Even though it is most commonly associated with its film industry, its music and dance are more than well-known around the world. Dance and songs in Bollywood movies are what have made them so popular, providing a whole cultural value. This eclectic dance culture has expanded all throughout the world, and today we share with you some festivals and competitions from several countries.

We offer Bollywood Dance lessons for Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced students. This fusion dance class brings you the best of the expressive beauty and contagious energy of Bollywood’s most stylized dances and mashes them up with the influences of Hip Hop, Latin, Jazz, Funk and Street styles.

Caitlin Brozna-Smith is our Bollywood teacher

bella diva dance caitlinCaitlin began her music and dance career in figure skating and studied classical ballet and jazz. She obtained a B.F.A. in Musical Theater and Dance from the University of Colorado. She then traveled the world and was able to learn new world dance forms such as: Belly Dance, Salsa, African, Brazilian Samba No Pe and Bollywood. Caitlin went on to receive her Master of Arts in International Affairs & Communication from the University of Denver in 2005. She is currently an Adjunct Professor on faculty at the University of Denver in the Theater Department and the Lamont School of Music.

This is a film festival that showcases the newest films involving the most promising talent, along with Bollywood Dance shows with famous dancers from Bollywood and around the world, a Bollywood Fashion Show and also offers workshops for young people. Greece: Bollywood and Multicultural Dance Festival
3-5 July 2015

The third edition of this festival will take place in Athens. The festival offers dance and music workshops from guest Master teachers, presentations, performances, lectures, bazaars and more. Australia: Telstra Bollywood Dance Competition 2015
14 – 27 August 2015

Part of Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2015, this competition gathered (under the rain!) 5000 people last year. Over 20 classical and contemporary acts presented last year. Belly Dance Festivals and Competitions

Miami Belly Dance Convention

The biggest Bellydance Festival on the East Coast is held in August this year. In this 4 day event, over 500 dance students and teachers from around the world compete, learn, perform and connect with other dancers. Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive & Festival

This is a 4-day extravaganza of non-stop entertainment and education. It includes a dance festival, dance shows, a “So, you think you can Belly Dance?” contest, Vegas-style cocktail party with live music, and even shopping will be available. International Bellydance Eilat Festival

Another 4-day festival held in the city of Eilat, Israel, on the Red Sea. They host dancers from around the world, with live music orchestra, workshops, shows, competitions, and night parties.
