A Weekend of World Music and Dance with Shahrzad Khorsandi

Persian dance workshop in Denver

Persian Dance & Music Weekend Coming to Denver! Oct. 5-7, 2017

The Denver Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs, Clarinoodle Productions LLC, and Bella Diva Dance present a weekend of world music and dance with Shahrzad Khorsandi from San Francisco, California and the Farabi Ensemble from Westminster, Colorado.

WORKSHOP: Thursday, Oct 5th 6:30-9:00 PM – 2.5 Hrs

$40 in advance, $50 at the door if space is available. Class limited to 22 participants.

On Thursday, Oct 5th, Bella Diva Dance School will be offering a Persian dance master workshop with Shahrzad, where students will learn fundamental Persian dance technique and aesthetics that will be staged into a choreography to be performed the following day at the Mercury Café, during the weekend showcase with the Farabi Ensemble.

Persia, bordering Central Asia and the Middle East, is the home of Classical Persian Dance. This dance style is a fluid yet rhythmic dance form, which emphasizes the use of hands and wrists. The movement and positioning of the body reflect the rich and refined aesthetics of Persia. The focus of this course is on the shape of the hands, movement of the wrists and feet, isolation and coordination of arms and legs, and capturing the Persian aesthetics in the body line. Nomenclature of the movements will be presented in Farsi. Pre-recorded Classical Persian music will be used in class from Colorado’s own Farabi Ensemble and other selections.

Persian dance workshop Denver

Shahrzad’s unique style of Contemporary Persian Ballet captures and combines the unleashed expression of contemporary dance with the refined, poetically potent aesthetics of ancient Persia, resulting in choreography that is both conceptual and organically expressive.

This master class explores Persian aesthetics manifested in fundamental body positions, lines, and transitions. Specific movement vocabulary will be presented and drilled in simple movement phrases that allow the dancer to integrate the technique and style into their body. This course is perfect for those new to Persian dance and seasoned Persian dancers, who seek a foundational technique class to become more grounded in the style.

The Art of Persian Dance

The Art of Persian Dance

With fluidity and rhythm, this dance showcases the rich and refined aesthetics of the Persian culture.

A Background Check on Persian Dance

The body positioning, movement, and use of the hands do a great job of conveying what this culture is about. As you can imagine by the name, Persian dance was born in the region that borders the Middle East and Central Asia called Persia. Dance had great social and religious relevance for this ancient culture.

It is the irony of history that ever since the revolution in 1979, this art form has been prohibited in the same country that once upon a time performed a central role for its expansion and advancement.

Persian Dance: The Origins

History estimates that the rise of this type of dance was around the same time that Mithraism came to be. This cult is related to the worship of Persia’s god of sun and light, known as Mithra, who sacrifices a bull to promote the vigor of life. Persians held a ritual where they had to get baptized in the blood of a bull, and later, a dance was performed by only men. This act was considered the earliest form of Iranian dance.

Persian Dance Genres

Persian Dance at Bella Diva Dance
Come learn about Persian culture next Oct 5th at Bella Diva Dance School

Classical: Also known as the classical court dance. Even when it’s not actually performed at a court, this genre involves solo improvised dances that often use that signature movement of the hands and arms that convey a flirty vibe.

Social: This is a more informal type of dance which is usually performed as part of social celebrations in places where public dance is permitted.

Folk: Regional dances, mostly related to religious or spiritual rituals. It’s not some much about performing for an audience, but for the pleasure of those dancing it.

Why Student Showcases Are So Important For Community & Confidence Building

Why Student Showcases Are So Important For Community & Confidence Building

Student showcases are a wonderful way for families and friends of the dancers to come together and encourages feelings of mutual support and pride. Performing can be a wonderful experience, but at the same time, it can be scary! Our commitment at Bella Diva Dance is to ensure that the experience is as rewarding as possible with a special team mentality. Every experience (good and bad!) will teach us something, and patience, encouragement, and support on all sides are important. Practice makes perfect, and performing isn’t any different. The more one does it, the more relaxed one will become on stage or in front of other people. Everyone will always feel nervous or get “butterflies” in their stomach before going on, but her/his performance will eventually become more relaxed and confident. Ultimately, the confidence you gain from performing will spill over into other areas of your life… sometimes in ways that you don’t even realize!

Dancers build lasting memories and friendships with one another. Maybe it’s the work or long hours together, or maybe it’s because you’ve each given so much of yourself, but it always happens. Wherever you go, when you spot that other dancer in the room (and you will), you’ll know you have something in common. That shared experience is part of a rich history of tradition and innovation that unites dancers all over the world. And, because dance is tied deeply to the roots of our communities and cultures, dance builds awareness and appreciation of the differences and similarities between people. This makes you a better citizen of the world.
