Verifica 2015 fundraiser Performance Video

Last March 18th, Bella Diva Dance held a fundraiser activity to benefit Verifica program at Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret. Verifica is a community-based program proven to stop human traffickers by creating awareness and recognition of tactics sex-trade recruiters use to lure, exploit, and ultimately kidnap teenagers in marginalized communities.

Traffickers prey on innocent teenagers from vulnerable communities. They often pose as recruiters with promises of employment in distant cities and then sell their victims into slavery in the sex-trade or forced labor. By combining awareness with special tactics, Verifica exposes traffickers before they can exploit the innocent without risk to the targeted teams or the community. Verifica is designed primarily for international communities as its systems counter the specific methods used by traffickers outside the United States, by targeting the ‘supply’ side of the sex-trade from and economic viewpoint.

PIER Verifica Outreach Colombia   PIER Verifica Training Honduras

PIER Institute is the exclusive licensing and certification agent for the Verifica program. Licensing fees are 100% tax-deductible in the US. Once implemented, there is no cost to sustain the program and Verifica is 100% administered and maintained by the communities it serves.

Verifica Fundraiser Dola Re Dola Performance

Here is a fragment of one of the presentations held that day. This fusion of Bollywood and Belly Dance performance is danced to the music of Dola Re Dola. This is a song from the Indian romantic drama film Devdas, from 2002. This song was a hit as the scene in the movie shows a unique dancing duet between two widely recognized actresses of the Bollywood era: Aishwayra Rai and Madhuri Dixit. The song is sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy, Shreya Ghoshal & K.K. Enjoy the video!

Modern Mother’s Day Celebration

Anna Jarvis

The celebration of Mother’s Day takes place in different months of the year, such as March, May, August, all around the world. Some of these dates are related to ancient celebrations that later on turned into what we know as modern Mother’s Day. One of this celebrations was Mothering Sunday, held in England, back in the 1600s. This was a Catholic celebration that took place on the 4th Sunday of Lent, to pay honors to Virgin Mary. Over the years, this day became a more secular day in which children would bring flowers, cakes and other tokens of their appreciation to their mothers. Some other celebrations can be traced back as early as the Greek civilization, where they would held festivals in honor of mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele.

Mother’s Day in America

Modern American Mother’s Day has its roots on some female characters from the 19th Century, Civil War Era. Before the Civil War, Ann Reeve Jarvis, in West Virginia, started “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” in which they would teach mothers how to properly take care of their children. These clubs were later on places where mothers of former Confederate and Union soldiers would reunite to promote reconciliation. The works of Julia Ward Howe, an abolitionist and suffragette, have also been considered as precursors for Mother’s Day. In 1870, she wrote the “Mother’s Day Proclamation” asking mothers to unite in promoting peace. Three years later, she campaigned for Mother’s Peace Day to be celebrated on June 2.

It was Ann Reeve Jarvis’ daughter, Anna Jarvis, who after her mother had passed away, decided to fight to have a national Mother’s Day added to the calendar as she argued that holidays were biased toward male achievements. In May 1908, after obtaining some financial backing, organised the first official Mother’s Day celebration in a Methodist Church in West Virginia. It was until 1914, that president Woodrow Wilson, agreed to establish the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Jarvis’ idea of celebrating this day was visiting one’s mother, wearing a white carnation as a badge or attending Church’s services. Later on, the celebration was so commercialised that even Jarvis disowned the holiday and fought for people to stop buying things instead of honouring its original purpose.

Celebrate your Mother with an exciting dance class!

On this day, our Mothers are what matter the most. Give her something unique that could mean a lot to her. Give your mother some of your time, as that is what they cherish the most. If your mom enjoys some physical activity, bring her to a Bella Diva Dance class and spend time together having fun in a Belly Dance class, Yoga class, Bollywood class or any of our other classes! We guarantee it will bring a smile to her face!

One Billion Rising: Denver 2015 video

1br_rev_landscape_stack_w.date_black(2)Last February, Bella Diva Dance joined a worldwide effort to speak up to end violence against women. The One Billion Rising campaign launched in 2012, and since then events take place in 200 countries where women, men and children raise their voices and dance in flash mobs outside court houses, police stations, and other public places where women deserve to feel safe but too often do not.

This year, Denver had its own rally, and we participated to support this empowering cause that concerns us all. Bella Diva Dance had a chance to have a booth that was voluntarily ran by our student’s parents with cupcakes, granola bars, refreshments and more for people to have for free. We were able to dance the Break the Chain choreography twice, first in Downtown and also at the stairs of the Capitol. We also marched with our banners from the Pavilion to the Capitol, where around 200 people joined us from Denver and other parts of Colorado.

We not only had a great time but also felt extremely proud to be part of this important event which signifies so much to us, as most of our students are females, indeed. Watch our video below, to see a short footage of this event that shows how people were deeply involved and also got to express their support and action by dancing, volunteering, marching or just by attending and joining us in this wonderful cause.

Additional Yoga stretches to help relieve lower body pain

Yoga Stretches

To continue sharing valuable information for dancers, and whomever exercises, we talk today about more yoga stretches. These poses can relieve pain in the hip and lower back. It’s important to follow instructions, and practice with a professional to make sure you’re doing the poses correctly. Join our yoga class to learn about these and other poses that can provide you many health benefits.

As we previously shared, there are numerous benefits from stretching properly, such as the easing of pain and decreasing chances of injuries. Let’s take a look at other poses…

Fire Log Pose

Fire Log yoga Pose

This pose should put the fire out in your hips. Sit on the floor with a straight spine, both sit bones pressing against the ground. Take the left leg out in front of you and bend it until it is in a straight line and parallel with your body, knee, and ankle. Stack the right leg on top of the left, lining up the right ankle to the left knee and the right knee to the left ankle. If you find the final position too difficult, you can use blocks as support to lighten the pose. This is a deep stretch to loosen the outer hips and glutes. It also stretches and strengthens the groin, calves, thighs, and abdominal muscles.

Goddess Pose

Yoga Goddess Pose (Utkata Konasana)

Gentlemen, do not be deterred by the name of this pose. It will help you open your hips regardless of your gender. Step your feet out very wide, turn the toes outward, bend the knees so they line up with your ankles, and tuck your butt in to engage the core. The further the toes are pointed outward, the deeper the stretch. This will give your groin, inner thighs, and hips a deep stretch. Note: Avoid this pose if you have a knee or hip injury.

Half Lord of The Fish Pose

ardha matsyendrasana half lord of the fishes pose over white

Sitting on the floor, extend both legs out in front of you. Keep the left leg straight and bend and pull the right leg in. Line the right heel up approximately 2 inches away from the back of the right leg and 2 inches away from the left thigh. Sit up very tall, avoiding sinking in the lower back. Wrap the left arm around the right leg, creating a spinal twist. Move the left shoulder forward as you move the right shoulder back, attempting to line the shoulders up. Take your gaze over the right shoulder. This pose stretches out the hips, glutes, lower back, spine, chest, shoulders, and neck.

Garland Pose

Woman doing Garland Pose in Yoga

This pose is so effective for opening the hips that it’s the position most women use to give birth. Turn your heels so they line up with your hips, turn your toes outward. Bend the knees until you reach a squatted position. Place a blanket under the heels if they have to be lifted while squatting. You can also stack two blocks to sit on to work up to the full integrity of the pose. The Garland Pose increases fluidity in the hips, and stretches the ankles, knees, and lower back. It also strengthens the core muscles.

World Dance Events: Rio Carnival

Last week, Bella Diva Dance celebrated Fat Tuesday Carnaval at Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret, where we performed and danced to samba wearing our magnificent feathered colorful costumes. At the same time, samba parades were taking over streets in Rio de Janeiro, as Brazil was celebrating its world famous Rio Carnival 2015.

Carnival in Rio de Janeiro origin

Rio Carnival is probabbella diva dance samba dancely the most famous and largest dance event carnival celebrated on a yearly basis. It is also one of the most antique festivals as it dates back to 1723. Every year, more than 2 million people pack the streets for five days (this year’s dates: February 13th – February 18th). The origins of the festival are tied to Greek and Roman civilizations, who worshiped their gods through wine and revelry celebration. Later, the Catholic Church modified this celebration to be led into Ash Wednesday. So, it’s a 5-day wild celebration, 40 days before Easter. On Ash Wednesday, one is supposed to abstain from all bodily pleasures, and that’s how Carnival acts as a farewell to the pleasures of the flesh.

There are many celebrations held throughout the country, but Carnival at Rio de Janeiro is undoubtedly the biggest and most visited one. The main show, is composed by the Samba Parades (or Sambodromo), which is actually a competition between the top Samba schools in Rio. There are about 200 Samba schools, and these are divided into leagues. These leagues , and other categories like Children’s Samba Schools, allow for different parades to take place during the days of Carnival. Many aspects are judged, such as percussion band, the samba song selected, costumes, floats and props, and more. Other attractions of Carnival are its balls, which range on location and prices, street parties, and even the opening of samba schools to the public, at night.

Vinyasa Yoga in Denver

Benefits of yoga for dancers

Vinyasa yoga is a discipline that utilizes postures and breathing techniques. It is a sequential movement that interlinks postures to form a continuous flow. Because of this, it is also known as flow yoga. The basic concept of this type of yoga is to perform the postures in a smooth way in which the poses run together and become like a dance. Breathing is essential to perform these poses, as the instructor will indicate when to move to a different pose on an inhale or exhale. Vinyasa has a sanskrit word root that means “connection”, which can then be interpreted as a connection between movement and breath.

yoga pigeon pose stretcg

Vinyasa Yoga origin

Vinyasa originated from Hatha yoga. Modern Vinyasa flow yoga (also known as power yoga and flow) is best described as freestyle Ashtanga as it doesn’t adhere to the rigid structure of Ashtanga set out by K. Pattabhi Jois. Ashtanga can be traced back to 200BC. Ashtanga yoga, as well as many other types of yoga in the world, owe its roots to yogi Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (1888-1989); who saved traditional yoga from oblivion and created the basis for our present-day yoga practices. He was given a place to teach yoga and eventually taught a young boy named Parrabhi Jois his learnings on the power of breathing. Jois then established an institute for practicing the specific form of Vinyasa yoga. It was first in 1964 that a Belgian visited Jois and then published a book, which led to Jois’s name becoming popular. In 1973, Norman Allen, was the first American to be taught by Jois. Other people started joining this movement, and quickly the knowledge of Jois and Krishnamacharya became popular in the Western hemisphere.
