How to improve Coordination?
The ability to organize yourself to move smoothly and efficiently is what coordination is all about. It comes natural to some and not so easy for others. Not everyone is born with that innate ability to be coordinated, and that’s ok. Coordination can be developed over time. Of course, it requires work, like anything else worth having. Another good thing is that age will not keep you from acquiring this skill. As long as you’re willing to work for it, you’ll get there.
You might feel like you have two left feet and like there’s no hope for your lack of coordination, but there is. If you’re working on learning new choreography, here are three simple tips that can help you improve coordination.
Take it Slow
It might sound counterintuitive but in order to move faster, you first need to slow down. First, you have to give your brain time to assimilate new moves. Rushing it is not going to make it come out perfect in less time. It could make it harder for you and delay the learning process.
Execute your new movement slowly once and then do it several times. Once you have that down, go over the details and when you feel you got it all in slow motion, go for it a regular pace.
Learn Piece by Piece
Breaking a movement into different pieces and learning one piece at a time is a great way to get into it slowly. Say, you have to make a particular move with your feet while you do something else with your arms, try practicing with your feet several times first and then move on to your arms. When you learn each part independently, integrating them later will be much more comfortable than wanting to do it all from the first try.
Practice Visualization
Visualizing your movements helps with coordination. Go over a move in your head and pay attention to where it starts and what follows until you get the full sequence.
