Choosing the Right Fabrics for a Killer Belly Dance Costume

Choosing fabrics is a crucial part of creating the perfect belly dance costume. Not everyone likes to take on the task to create their own costume but if you are a DIYer and a belly dancer, this might be exactly what you needed to know.

How to Choose Fabrics for Your Belly Dance Costume

When you look at a belly dancer’s costume, probably the first thing you notice is how flowy and light it is. Not every fabric is going to achieve this look and it would be terribly disappointing to spend so much time and effort on your costume, only to realize that your choice of fabric did not suit well in the end.

Knits vs Woven

When fabric is made, the fibers can either be knitted or woven together. Each kind of fabric has a different structure and will be better suited for certain types of garments. Knitted is made up of loops of a continuous thread making it a stretchier type of fabric that can be easier to handle and better at fitting around curves. Woven fabric is made up of several fibers that are intersected in a perpendicular manner to create a certain type of weave. This fabric is not as stretchy, unless spandex is woven in. Here are some fabric suggestions to help you create a beautiful belly dance costume.

Knitted Fabrics

  • Stretch velvet: This is a fuzzy type of fabric. It can work for skirts, bras or belts but not so much for sleeves and pants, as it can be very warm.
  • Mesh and net: Semi-sheer fabric with great stretch. It’s great for fitted sleeves and tummy cover-ups.
  • Liquid lamé: Complicated to work with since it’s hard to sew but can be used for a few simple shapes.
  • Metallic knit: Metallic threads run through the fabric making it look fancy. It can be quite itchy so it’s best when used with a lining so that the skin is not in direct contact with it.
