Most of the dancers work in done in dance class, but not all of it. There is work you can do off the dance floor that will help you improve your performance on the floor.

Training Your Memory to Learn Choreography

Your brain commands your body, so for your body to follow specific instructions, you must train your brain.  If you’ve been having a tough time learning choreography during dance class or remembering it when you go back the next time, your memory might need a little workout. Consider these tips to help you train your memory.

Do One Movement at a Time

Your hands need to be up here, head looking that way, feet this way. Sound familiar? Sometimes, there is so much you have to think about at once. Try breaking things down by body part. Learn the movement of your hands, then move on to the movement of your head, and then focus on your feet. Once you have everything down, putting it together will be much simpler.

Training Your Memory to Learn ChoreographyTry and Try Again

Practice, practice, practice. That’s the key. If you find that you have some spare time at home, take advantage of it to go over your choreography. Try to remember all the details you learned in class, and take the time to go through everything. Your memory will absorb it, and it will be easier for you to execute it next time.

Get Yourself on Video

When you’re having issues learning or remembering choreography, the best you can do is record yourself, and then watch the video. That gives you enough time to analyze your movements and correct yourself, and it also simplifies the learning process.

 

Regardless of the style of dance you pursue, you’ll need to condition your brain just as much as your body, to help you improve as a dancer over time. We encourage you to practice between classes.
