What is Samba No Pé?

You’ve heard of Samba but have you heard of Samba no pé? Samba comes in a variety of “flavors”: Samba de Gafieira, Samba Pagode, Samba Axé, Samba-reggae, Samba-rock, Samba de Roda and… —wait for it— Samba no pé! If you are new to the world of Samba, we’re here to tell you a little more about it.

Samba no pé means samba on the feet. It comes from the favelas of Brazil, and it accurately depicts the distinct heritage of the Brazilian people. This type of samba is commonly danced impromptu whenever samba music comes on. It is mostly associated with Brazilian carnival; however, it is not limited to that particular setting. It may be danced in all kinds of environments like concerts and music festivals as long as the music is right.

A Little Background on Samba No Pé

The rhythm of this style is 2/4 and involves three movements of the feet for each bar of music. It may seem like a type of dance you would usually improvise, but it has a very well-defined primary step. You know, the step most people think of when they think of samba. It looks like a step-ball-change. It can be wildly complicated to explain in words, but it is much easier to do it with your body by mimicking the movements of a teacher, especially when you’re in class and front of the mirror. Samba is not just one primary step or a bunch of steps you need to learn. It is meant to be felt all through your body, so it comes out naturally.

Male samba no pé dancers perform different steps than women do. They tend to do a lot more acrobatic tricks with their feet. They let their feet do all the talking. Women, on the other hand, tend to stick with the quick and symmetrical movement of the feet. They perform a lot of arm and hip movements to emphasize their femininity.

This style of samba is often danced unaccompanied, and it starts as soon as the music comes on. There are fast samba and a slower variation, but the pace will ultimately depend on the music. If you’ve never tried Samba before, you should! It’s an energetic and super fun type of dance and involves cute costumes too 😉 Join our adult samba classes at Bella Diva World Dance and get ready for a wonderful dance experience.
