If you have ever been curious about dipping your toes into Polynesian dance, THIS workshop is meant for you! Tahitian dance is a beautiful dance style from the Polynesian island of Tahiti, which is done to the rhythm of fast drum beats and is meant to depict the day to day life occupations of their people.
We have prepared a 2-hour workshop to cover all the basics with you. We will be focusing on traditional Tahitian Otea style dance. This particular style of Polynesian dance is very much communicating with the hips —a movement often referred to as “hip shaking”—unlike other techniques of the Pacific that use the hands to communicate the most (i.e. Hula). Even though Hula dance can be very fast, it is never as fast as Tahitian dance.
Our awesome instructor, April, will go over all of the primary hip movements, such as tamau, ami, afata, varu, and Fa’arapu. Then, we will layer all those movements with commonly used arm and feet movement patterns to form dance combinations that can be drilled at home.
