Musicality is basically the ability to understand music and rhythm, and translating music into movement through dance.

Put Your Musicality to Work

As dancers, it’s important to train our brains and bodies to react to music so that we may become better dancers and choreographers. Every one of us has a different approach to dancing which gives us a signature stamp and makes us unique.

Musicality can be translated into choreography and freestyle. In both cases, we need to prep to really understand the material we’re working with. Listening to the song several times and exploring different types of movements will impact the quality of the final piece and will also permeate your style, which will impact your ability to freestyle at any given time.

Understand the Song You’re Working With

Breaking down the song and understanding all of its parts and nuances will allow you to pick and choose what you want to showcase in your choreography. There are some obvious elements in a song like the vocals or the drums, but showcasing the subtleties in a song will make for a much more powerful piece. In the end, it really all depends on what you want to communicate through those movements and how they relate to the song, so listen carefully and let your creativity flow.

Recognize Your Own Perception of Music

We all understand music in different ways. Some might choreograph to the lyrics of a song, others will rhythm the home of their creativity, and others will showcase the beats. What’s your approach? There’s no right or wrong here. Let your personality and creativity speak out through the music and choose and combine these elements as you see fit. Challenge yourself to think of other ways to interpret one song. Studying other dancer’s musicality can be very enriching, too. This will all help you develop your musicality and train you to approach different songs in different ways, and it will inspire you to keep building your signature style.
