What is Classical Persian Dance?

Persian Pop Plus: Mondays 6:30pm
Int/Adv Level 2: Mondays 7:45-8:45pm

This dance style is a fluid yet rhythmic dance form, which emphasizes the use of hands and wrists. The movement and positioning of the body reflect the rich and refined aesthetics of Persia. The focus of this beginner class will be on the shape of the hands, movement of the wrists and feet, isolation and coordination of arms and legs, and capturing the Persian aesthetics in the body line. Specific movement vocabulary will be presented and drilled in simple movement phrases that allow the dancer to integrate the technique and style into their body. This course is perfect for those new to Persian dance and seasoned Persian dancers who seek a foundational technique class to become more grounded in the style.

Persian Pop+

In this all-levels Persian Pop+ dance class, dancers practice fun, choreographed combinations using Persian-Iranian movement vocabulary to popular Iranian music. Plus (+) the last class each month is dedicated to non-Pop traditional music and dance.

Persian-Iranian Pop dance, known in Persian as “Mehmooni”, is a playful style perfect for parties or staged performances, but it also serves as an excellent entryway to more advanced Persian dance stylizations since it uses the same foundational movement vocabulary. The once-per-month class dedicated to non-pop music allows for engaging in the complex world of Persian classical music in the Radif system and other traditional music genres and practicing accompanying dance stylizations including Sama/mystical, Ruhowzi and more.

Dance taught in the Intermediate-Advanced class are set to more complex traditional or contemporary music with challenging time signatures and melodies and integrate more advanced movements and combinations. See Intermediate-Advanced Persian dance class offerings in-person and online.
