Equilibrium: Why It Matters

Maintaining the center of gravity is critical when you’re in constant movement.

Balance is Essential in Dance

The state of bodily equilibrium is known as balance. It allows you to keep your center of gravity and, at the same time, minimize postural sway.

By coordinating the vestibular, motor and visual systems, the body can achieve balance. Simply put, when your inner ear, muscles, tendons, joints, and vision work together, your body can maintain a still position.

The real test of balance consists of switching from one position to the next and doing it in a smooth and controlled manner. That sounds a lot like dancing, doesn’t it? Balance is an essential element of dance, and it’s part of what gives it that effortless quality. Mainly, since the eyes won’t always focus on one spot, to complete moves and transitions successfully, the right balance must exist.

2 Elements of Balance to Work On

Many of the movements in dance involve jumps and spins, which elevate the complexity of a dance routine, since it could be effortless to miss a step or misplace a foot, causing the dancer to fall and potentially injure her or himself. To improve your balance here are two key elements.

Balance is Essential in DanceCore

A strong core enables the entire body to move with much more ease. Exercises such as yoga or pilates are perfect for developing strong core muscles, and therefore, improve stability.

Posture

Being aware of your body is critical, and good posture is part of that awareness. It is not something that should only be practiced on the dance floor; it should be part of our everyday lives. As you consistently practice good posture, it will eventually become the norm, and you’ll find it much easier to maintain while dancing.
