Basic tips to be
a healthy woman

1. Sleep plenty

People don’t emphasize on this too much because it is easy to get used to sleeping less and bad. We grow accustomed to our routines and don’t realize that we’re taking years away from our lives. Most people don’t sleep enough hours and let alone, sleep well. We need enough sleep to recover and process any new information. It’s important we let our bodies rest and recuperate to function adequately. A bad habit people is to go to sleep with the phone or tablet in hand.

The screen’s bright light and spending more time than you need on a social network can deprive you from getting enough good-night sleep.

2. Drink enough water

We need water, our bodies are mostly composed of it! A very good tip is to drink a large glass of water, first thing in the morning. When we wake up we’re dehydrated because we have been sleeping for hours and burning calories. During the day, we should drink large amounts of liquid. Our body, and every cell in it, requires water. It’s a mandatory basic element for many body functions. And we’re not referring to ingesting liquids, we mean you should be drinking plain colorless pure water all day long!

Depression has always been considered as one of the most common mood disorders, but many still continue to look at it as a temporary state of mind. People who suffer from depression have difficulty in acknowledging this and have trouble reaching out to others and, eventually, getting started on a treatment, https://www.opaortho.com/valium-treatment-anxiety/. Even though it is a real medical disorder, there is much taboo behind it and myths that prevent us from getting the help we really need. Once a person has been diagnosed and is getting help, including Dance and movement therapy could help drastically.

That’s one billion women and girls on this planet. One Billion Rising was initiated in response and is to date the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history. The initial call to action launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, The following year February 14th, 2013, women and men across the world came together to express their outrage, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to targeted violence against women.

Last year, on V-Day 2015, millions of people in over 200 countries gathered to Rise for REVOLUTION, to change the paradigm, demand accountability, justice and systematic CHANGE. In 2016, the theme of Revolution continues with a call to focus on marginalized women and to bring national and international focus to their issues; to bring in new artistic energy; to amplify Revolution as a call for system change to end violence against women and girls; to call on people to rise for others, and not just for themselves.

For the past 3 years, Denver has been RISING as part of V-Day and One Billion Rising on February 14th at downtown on the 16th St. Mall, and then on the steps of the Capitol. Last year, over 200 Coloradoans participated and it is expected to surpass 300 this year. Our Denver revolution has several layers. Dance companies throughout the state will learn the same dance, one choreographed by renowned artist Debbie Allen, in solidarity with our sisters across the planet. Participants, including survivors of rape and abuse, will then march to the Colorado State Capitol, where we hold a rally and call to action. At the capitol, we speak to:

Start the year with First Day Hikes Program

exercise outside in Denver

With a new year around the corner, it’s time to get off our feet and start it with the right foot. What better way than a hike, enjoying the fresh air and beautiful nature of our State National Parks? This upcoming January 1st, 2016, gather the family and plan to welcome the year embracing the outdoors. Colorado is about the land and animals, so let’s make the most of it by attending one of America’s State Parks First Day Hikes.

Snowman

Where to go?

First Day Hikes Program started 5 years ago, by an initiative of America’s State Parks and the National Association of State Park Directors. Each park offers at least one guided hike and other self-guided hikes, as well. Check the America’s State Park website to find your favorite park to visit.

Advice when hiking in winter

As we’re in winter, it’s important to keep some things in mind. Here are some quick tips when going on a hike in winter:

1. Remember to dress in layers, making sure you have enough to play along with the weather. A waterproof jacket or poncho is vital for that unexpected rain or snow.
2. Wear a hat always! Body heat escapes the body through the head, make sure to keep warm with a hat.
3. Take an insulated water bottle or make sure to keep it warm with a koozie or keeping inside your jacket so it doesn’t freeze.
4. Remember sun’s glare reflecting on the snow can burn as bad as the intense beach sun. Don’t forget to wear sunscreen!
5. Carry a flashlight with you as winter days are shorter and dusk settles earlier.

Dance buddies in Denver
Caitlin & Rhonda from BDD

Accountability

You’re far more likely to actually work out when (1) you’re forced to schedule it ahead of time, and (2) canceling means inconveniencing a friend. Making concrete plans with another person means you’ll be far less likely to cancel in favor of the couch. This is the whole idea behind the “Accounta-Bella Buddy” system!

Motivation

In addition to keeping you accountable, friends can provide an extra boost of motivation when it gets tough. Everyone has those days when they just don’t feel like going to the studio, and when they want to call it quits, friends can offer encouragement to keep you going. Just be sure to return the favor!

Learn Something Wild & New!

Gyms can get repetitive and stagnant, so why not burn even more calories while challenging your brain and connecting with others? At Bella Diva Dance there are over 7 different styles & genres of world dance classes to keep you stimulated and busting a move!

Have More Fun

Having fun while dancing

Those who have hit the gym or fitness routine with friends know that it’s usually more enjoyable than going alone, and several studies have reached that conclusion too. One study in particular surveyed 117 people using their phones to ask what they were doing, who they were with, where they were, how they were feeling and more. The results suggest that people enjoy physical activity more when they’re with their friends.

Workout Longer

Time flies when you’re having fun…or at least when you are distracted! Having someone to chat and laugh with between glutes squeezes, lets you focus on something other than just your workout, making the time go by faster.

Interpersonal Support

The need for interpersonal support is primal, says Wayne Andersen, MD, cofounder and medical director of Take Shape for Life, a nationwide health and lifestyle coaching program based in Owings Mills, Md: “We are social animals. We seek the company and positive reinforcemDancing with friendsent of others, especially when we are doing work.”

Also, exercise partners provide a powerful combination of support, accountability, motivation and, in some cases, healthy competition. “They can play the role of teammate, co-coach and cheerleader — all while working out,”  says Michelle P. Maidenberg, PhD, MPH, clinical director of Westchester Group Works in Harrison, N.Y.

A few other fun benefits!

  • You have someone to text the next day about post-workout pains, because no one else will understand why you’re limping in the office!
  • You have someone to eat with after surviving samba, because we are dancers who eat! Chipotle? Yes, please!
  • You will look a lot less crazy if you can get your friend to do it with you.

How to Be a Fab ‘Accounta-Bella’ Buddy!

Build your active partnership with thoughtful acts of support like these:

  • Be in touch. Send reminder texts or emails, prearrange rides to the studio, offer wake-up calls if necessary.
  • Be on time. Always.
  • Push your partner, then reinforce her efforts with praise.
  • Suggest new ideas and routines to keep things interesting and prevent plateaus.
  • Remind your partner of her goals and encourage her when the going gets rough.
  • Keep tabs on each other through illness, travel and other routine-breakers. It will make it easier to get back on track.
  • Talk about topics other than fitness. The more you care about your partner as a person, the stronger your alliance will be. But don’t wallow in negative talk. It’s an energy downer!
  • Be flexible. Sitter canceled? Take turns watching the kids so each of you can exercise independently.

How to Take Care of Your Skin in the Denver Winter

Keep muscles cozy during winter

Dry skin is a fact for most women in Denver. During winter, cold, dry weather affects our skin and hair. But there’s something more than the outdoor elements that affect our skin even more and makes it dry and even flaky. Indoor heat!  As we turn up the temperature inside, we make our body lose moisture. It doesn’t matter if it’s electrical heating, oil or wood fireplaces, the heat will inevitably rob moisture and water from your body.

Essential Health Tips for Taking Care of your Skin During Winter

1. Short warm showers

It might sound crazy for people who love them, especially in winter; but, avoid taking long hot showers. These longed-for baths are causing you more damage than good. The prolonged contact with hot water will leave your hair and skin dry and vulnerable. Instead, stick to a warm water shower in less than 5 minutes. By the way, this is also energy saving and planet friendly!

2. Moisturize More than Ever

People know it’s paramount to moisture more during winter, but not everyone knows how to do it. It’s important to make sure you’re using the right products as those that you used in spring or summer might not do the trick. Most of us will need a lotion or ointment that is oil-based, not water-based. Oil will provide your skin with an extra protective layer that will retain moisture longer. Most night creams are oil-based.

3. Dress according to weather conditions

It doesn’t matter if you have lived in Denver your whole life. Outdoor winds and temperatures affect your body, skin and hair. And let’s not forget about the risk of hypothermia. Winter weather can be very unpredictable in Colorado and temperatures can change drastically in a few minutes. Buy a good pair of gloves to protect your hands. Always use a good hat to keep your body heat right where it belongs, in your body. It is also essential to prevent your hair from drying outBring a scarf and extra protection if you will be outdoors for a long time.

4. Eat the right food

During the holidays, we eat a lot of delicious, and sometimes greasy food. And them we feast on leftovers. We tell ourselves the little extra here and there is keeping us warm and with enough calories to get by winter. Yes, it’s important to eat well for winter but it is also important to include healthy fats to your plate. These healthy monosaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids will boost up your skin. So add more fish, nuts, olive oil, flaxseeds, sardines and avocados to your meals. Make sure also to include Vitamin C-rich products, like citrus fruits and dark leafy greens into your plate. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant and will help your skin fight the winter cold.
