Dance 101: Samba basic steps and moves

Samba is a dance of joy, of vibration and pure color.

bella diva dance carnivaleSamba has been Rio de Janiero’s gift to the world. Brazilians are warm-blooded people full of energy and big smiles, and so is their dance, Samba is no exception to the magic. The Carnaval of Rio is the biggest samba event in the world, reproduced in many other places. This dance is now taught all around the world and many get to enjoy the pure energy of dancing Samba. Here are some basic steps and moves of Samba.

Basic Samba moves to get started

Feet: weight transfer

One of the important things is to follow the beat of the music. The basic feet movement involves transferring your weight from one foot to the other one on the beat. Keeping your knees slightly bent, with a toe-heel movement, keep the movement counting “one, two, three, four”.

Hip movement

Hip movement is key! As you move your feet, add a hip movement. When transferring the weight to the right, swing your hip to the right. Then do the same to the left. Make sure to engage your abs to keep in balance and get a core workout.

Arms to the sides

Move your arms opposite to your legs and swing them naturally and relaxed to the sides. Keep them waist high. Remember, the important thing is to keep the beat and smile!

But stretching is more than that. Correct stretching helps relief pain, increase blood circulation, increase flexibility, aids in relaxation, and improves posture. Great stretching exercises for dancers

Runner’s stretch

This is one of the most commonly practiced stretches for the lower body. Step your right foot forward and lower into a lunge position, placing your hands on the floor. If you can’t reach, use cushions or blocks. Inhale and as you exhale straighten your right leg.
https://www.parkviewortho.com/wp-content/languages/new/sildenafil.html

Return to starting position, and repeat 3 to 4 times. Switch legs.

Standing side stretch

Stand with your feet together and your arms raised over your head. Join hands and intertwine your fingers. As you inhale, reach upwards. As you exhale, bend sideways and hold that position for 3-4 breaths. Return to center and switch sides.

Butterfly stretch

Sit on the floor, with your feet flat against the ground. Let your knees fall to your sides and press your feet together. Slowly, pull your heels towards you without causing discomfort. By keeping a good back posture, smoothly bounce your knees up and down slow. This will loosen the muscles of your groin and inner thigh. You can add more pressure by pressing down slightly with your elbows.

Standing thigh stretch

Standing with your legs together, pull one of your feet up towards your back and grab with the hand of that same side. Make sure your knees are side by side, parallel. Keep your back straight and to help you with balance engage your abs.

Breathe in 3-4 times and then switch sides.

Ever Heard of a Doumbek?

Announcing our newest class offering for 2016!

Intro to Middle Eastern Drumming
Thursdays 5:30-6:30 PM: starting Feb. 4th

Register online

Theo 3

Expand your awareness of rhythm, sequence, sound, and synchronicity, and learn to drum for belly-dancers! If you are already a dancer, deepen your understanding of musicality by studying the origins of the beats that move you!

image (2)In this class, students will learn ancient rhythms from the cradle of civilization, rhythms that are still heard on the radio today. These rhythms persist because connect to our early human roots, as natural as a heart beat. The drum inspires hope, movement, empathy, and visceral urges, which all lead to DANCING. You will learn to impart joy when you share this music, more so by co-creating rhythms within a group of your classmates at Bella Diva Dance.

The course will cover the Basics of Arabic Drumming. Students will learn how to play basic sounds on the Doumbek and drill specific rhythms to continuously improve in speed and sound quality. Bella Diva will provide Doumbeks to play in class, but eventually, you are encouraged to have a drum of your own so you can practice at home!

Students will learn the most common Middle-Eastern rhythms and their variations including Baladi, Masmoudi, Malfuf, Saidi, Maksoum, Ayoub, and Chiftitelli. We will also learn how to hold a Turkish-style jam session in a group and eventually perform as an ensemble to accompany belly dancers!

Meet the Instructor: Theo Drama

Theo 1

Theo is an experienced group facilitator and teacher: a founding leader of Denver Drum and Dance, math tutor/teacher, and private Doumbek lesson instructor. He is also a performer who has appeared playing the Doumbek at Cervantes Otherside in Denver and across the Front Range. Theo spent years shaping his musicianship, starting with piano at five-years-old. After his parents moved his family to Austria when he was six, they would bring young Theo to the symphony, sometimes to see his father conduct.

Back in the US, as a teenager, Theo kept learning new instruments and spent six years in choruses at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. When Theo stumbled upon a video of Onur, a Turkish Doumbek drummer, he passionately resolved to reach for that kind of freedom of expression. Now for the last four years, Theo has been fervently training with the Doumbek. Theo has learned from several Doumbek masters and has studied with Raquy in person at her Darbuka camp in upstate New York.

Theo’s patient, people-loving personality makes him a natural teacher, and his belief that music is meaningless unless shared, fuels his drive to share his passion and love for this instrument.

Introducing the “Accounta-Bella Buddy” System

New Year's “Accounta-Bella Buddy” system

A dynamic duo, typically friends or colleagues, who attend our dance classes together and have developed a regular routine of connecting & celebrating through dance!

With 2016 right around the corner and New Year’s Fitness Resolutions in tow, there are some important factors to take into consideration for long-term success.

If there were a way to double your chances of fitness success, would you be interested? How about a technique to make exercise more fun? A tool that automatically creates space and time in your busy schedule for workouts? A proven way to help you out of a rut or through a plateau?

It may all sound too good to be true, but countless fitness seekers have found that the right workout buddy, or what we call your “Accounta-Bella Buddy,” can do all that and more! Dance buddies can help you stay committed to your fitness goals AND have fun. Here are just a few of the benefits you will find by teaming up with that partner in crime, and WHY it works!

Dance buddies in Denver
Caitlin & Rhonda from BDD

Accountability

You’re far more likely to actually work out when (1) you’re forced to schedule it ahead of time, and (2) canceling means inconveniencing a friend. Making concrete plans with another person means you’ll be far less likely to cancel in favor of the couch. This is the whole idea behind the “Accounta-Bella Buddy” system!

Motivation

In addition to keeping you accountable, friends can provide an extra boost of motivation when it gets tough. Everyone has those days when they just don’t feel like going to the studio, and when they want to call it quits, friends can offer encouragement to keep you going. Just be sure to return the favor!

Learn Something Wild & New!

Gyms can get repetitive and stagnant, so why not burn even more calories while challenging your brain and connecting with others? At Bella Diva Dance there are over 7 different styles & genres of world dance classes to keep you stimulated and busting a move!

Have More Fun

Having fun while dancing

Those who have hit the gym or fitness routine with friends know that it’s usually more enjoyable than going alone, and several studies have reached that conclusion too. One study in particular surveyed 117 people using their phones to ask what they were doing, who they were with, where they were, how they were feeling and more. The results suggest that people enjoy physical activity more when they’re with their friends.

Workout Longer

Time flies when you’re having fun…or at least when you are distracted! Having someone to chat and laugh with between glutes squeezes, lets you focus on something other than just your workout, making the time go by faster.

Interpersonal Support

The need for interpersonal support is primal, says Wayne Andersen, MD, cofounder and medical director of Take Shape for Life, a nationwide health and lifestyle coaching program based in Owings Mills, Md: “We are social animals. We seek the company and positive reinforcemDancing with friendsent of others, especially when we are doing work.”

Also, exercise partners provide a powerful combination of support, accountability, motivation and, in some cases, healthy competition. “They can play the role of teammate, co-coach and cheerleader — all while working out,”  says Michelle P. Maidenberg, PhD, MPH, clinical director of Westchester Group Works in Harrison, N.Y.

A few other fun benefits!

  • You have someone to text the next day about post-workout pains, because no one else will understand why you’re limping in the office!
  • You have someone to eat with after surviving samba, because we are dancers who eat! Chipotle? Yes, please!
  • You will look a lot less crazy if you can get your friend to do it with you.

How to Be a Fab ‘Accounta-Bella’ Buddy!

Build your active partnership with thoughtful acts of support like these:

  • Be in touch. Send reminder texts or emails, prearrange rides to the studio, offer wake-up calls if necessary.
  • Be on time. Always.
  • Push your partner, then reinforce her efforts with praise.
  • Suggest new ideas and routines to keep things interesting and prevent plateaus.
  • Remind your partner of her goals and encourage her when the going gets rough.
  • Keep tabs on each other through illness, travel and other routine-breakers. It will make it easier to get back on track.
  • Talk about topics other than fitness. The more you care about your partner as a person, the stronger your alliance will be. But don’t wallow in negative talk. It’s an energy downer!
  • Be flexible. Sitter canceled? Take turns watching the kids so each of you can exercise independently.

Top Christmas Musicals And Dance Shows

A Christmas Carol

It goes without saying, that a Christmas Carol has to be at the top of this list. Charles Dickens’s 1843 book has been played, adapted as musical, movie, animated and produced in different ways at your local theaters, schools, and even at the most prestigious houses in the country. The story of a lonely rich man who goes through a redemption trip with three ghosts has delighted children and adults through the years. Some of its most peculiar versions are: “A Klingon Christmas Carol” and a “A Christmas Carol, Oy Hanukkah, Merry Kwanzaa” performed in New York.

Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical

It started as a beloved children’s book and then was screened in movie theaters and TV series. But it was finally brought to life on stage for the first time in 1994, by the Minneapolis’s Children’s Theater Company. Ever since, it is still played there and has also toured around the country many times. The story of how the green grumpy Grinch ruins and restores Christmas has scared and marveled children many times. It was finally brought to Broadway in 2006 and it is now part of our list of classics.

The Nutcracker Ballet

This well-known beautiful ballet show has been around as one of Christmas favorite shows for a very long time. Its origins are found in Russia, and it’s based on the story of “The Nutcracker and the King of Mice“, premiered on December 1892. The adapted and more contemporanean show started gaining popularity in the late 1960s.
