The Pleasure of Dance

There are a lot of reasons why we dance, but is there a reason why we enjoy it?

Why Is Dance Pleasurable to Us?

Dance can help you get fitter, make you feel happier and more relaxed, it’s an outlet for many of us and just a fun way to pass the time for others. But the truth is those benefits can be obtained via many other activities, not just dance. There must be a reason why we choose it, though.

What is it that makes it so appealing to us? Why do we love it?

Why do we love to dance? From a scientific standpoint, dance stimulates certain parts of our brain that makes us feel pleasure when we do it.

Although research hasn’t actually been able to conclude what the real reason is, there are some speculations on this topic.

For example, there’s evidence that tells us that sensory experiences are motor experiences, too. This causes speculators to say that some reward-related areas of our brain are in tune with motor areas. So when we listen to a song and start tapping our foot against the floor, we start feeling rewarded, which translates to why we enjoy dance so much.

From a psychological point of view, we get pleasure out of dance because it allows us to express ourselves in times when there are no words that can communicate how we feel. Some say dance serves as a translator for our heart, which can be a somewhat accurate description. Dancing can make you feel enormous amounts of joy, possibly because it helps endorphins kick in, which is a feeling that’s continuously sought after.

A Community That Shares Dance

At Bella Diva Dance, we understand the pleasure of dance, and we are happy to be able to share the magic of movement with you, along with the authenticity of various cultures from around the world. If you love to dance, this is the place for you.

Between work, house chores, school, and dance, it gets tricky to keep up with your nutrition. Having a healthy snack handy can undoubtedly save the day, especially when you’re about to hit the dance floor.

On-the-Go Snacks That Pack a Punch

We all know how important it is to provide your body with all the nutrients it needs to carry out its tasks. As a dancer, your nutrition directly relates to how well you perform. If you want to conquer the dance floor, you must fuel your body correctly. That can be hard sometimes, especially, with everything else going on in life.

Hula Dance: A Media of Storytelling

Hula Dance: A Media of Storytelling

There’s a lot more about Hawaiian Hula beyond the coconut tops and the grass skirts. Want to find out?

The Myth of Hawaiian Hula

A dance thought to have been invented by goddesses, with so much cultural richness that when the opportunity to learn more about it presents itself, it can’t be passed up. Hula dance can be traced back to when the first Polynesian travelers set foot on the beautiful islands of Hawaii.

Along with the time it’s been around for, it carries endless stories with it that make it a deep-rooted part of the Hawaiian culture. The goal of a hula dancer is to tell a story, told by a particular song through movement.

Hula Kahiko and Hula ‘Auana

hot hula DenverThere are two sides to Hawaiian Hula: the traditional, known as Hula Kahiko and the modern, also called Hula ‘Auana. They vary in many things, including their customs.

Hula Kahiko is usually performed alongside a chanter which is responsible for “telling” the story through the song and, at the same time, set the rhythm. There’s a purpose behind this form of hula, which is to honor someone somewhere or something.

WORKSHOP: Thursday, Oct 5th 6:30-9:00 PM – 2.5 Hrs

$40 in advance, $50 at the door if space is available. Class limited to 22 participants.

On Thursday, Oct 5th, Bella Diva Dance School will be offering a Persian dance master workshop with Shahrzad, where students will learn fundamental Persian dance technique and aesthetics that will be staged into a choreography to be performed the following day at the Mercury Café, during the weekend showcase with the Farabi Ensemble.

Persia, bordering Central Asia and the Middle East, is the home of Classical Persian Dance. This dance style is a fluid yet rhythmic dance form, which emphasizes the use of hands and wrists. The movement and positioning of the body reflect the rich and refined aesthetics of Persia. The focus of this course is on the shape of the hands, movement of the wrists and feet, isolation and coordination of arms and legs, and capturing the Persian aesthetics in the body line. Nomenclature of the movements will be presented in Farsi. Pre-recorded Classical Persian music will be used in class from Colorado’s own Farabi Ensemble and other selections.

Persian dance workshop Denver

Shahrzad’s unique style of Contemporary Persian Ballet captures and combines the unleashed expression of contemporary dance with the refined, poetically potent aesthetics of ancient Persia, resulting in choreography that is both conceptual and organically expressive.

This master class explores Persian aesthetics manifested in fundamental body positions, lines, and transitions. Specific movement vocabulary will be presented and drilled in simple movement phrases that allow the dancer to integrate the technique and style into their body.
