Salutation to the Sun

Yoga, Hatha Yoga, is an ancient practice that was born in India. This is the physical discipline of continuous learning and challenging of our bodies. Yoga helps us improve our breathing, strengthens our body and clears our minds. There are many reasons for its popularity through the centuries. One of the most well-known sequence of poses is the salutation to the sun. Developed in the modern era of yoga, during which time asana was influenced by gymnastics and other types of exercises, we share how to perform the yoga sequence of the salutation to the Sun.

Yoga Basics: Salutation to the Sun Sequence= Surya Namaskar

Follow these steps to achieve the salutation to the sun. Ideally, this sequence should be practiced with the first rays of the sun.

  1. Mountain: stand with your feet together, parallel, and palms lightly pressed together. Make sure the crown of your head lifts up and your chin is parallel to the floor.
  2. Arms and palms up: staying in the same position, inhale and lift your arms together above your head. Reach to the sky with your thumbs locked up.
  3. Forward Fold: exhale and bend downwards, placing your palms on the floor, and slightly bending knees if necessary. Place your head between your legs.
  4. High Lunge: inhale and step the right foot into a high lunge. Make sure your left knee is over your ankle, not leaning forward or behind it. Check your shoulders to make sure they’re back and down.
  5. Plank: bring your other foot back to a plank position. Your body should be one straight line, in a push-up position. Breathe in.
  6. Caterpillar: exhale and bend your knees and elbows to the floor, lower your chin and chest to the floor, as well. Arch your back and bring your hips to the sky.
  7. Upward facing dog: inhale into upward facing dog by straightening your arms, bringing your chest forward and leaning on the tops of your feet.
  8. Downward facing dog: exhale into downward facing dog by bringing your hips back up to the sky, pressing your hands and feet to the floor, and let your head hang from the neck.
  9. High Lunge: inhale back into high lunge, like in step 4. Pay attention to your knee and ankle, and lock down your back foot and hips.
  10. Forward Fold: exhale and bring your back foot to the front to repeat step 3.
  11. Arms and palms together: inhale back, repeat step 2.
  12. Mountain: exhale and go back to initial position.

Watch a video that instructs how to practice the salutation to the sun.

From Belly Dance to contemporary and Dance Movement Therapy to tap dance, each style carries with it the wisdom gained from the trials and triumphs from generations of women who created these dances to express and reflect our growth. Art by those brave souls who have come before us! The dancers’ bodies are conduits for creativity, passion, perseverance, and their generosity of spirit allows us to experience these things with them.

Choreographers  met last February, to collaborate and network; showing pieces they had created, inspired by the theme Ghosts of Us. At that time, they received feedback from peers had 30 days to incorporate the suggestions/put the finishing touches on the piece, and this weekend is the final product. Breaking Down Belly Dance Myths 101

Dancing during pregnancy

Let’s Break Down Some Belly Dance Myths

Belly Dance has always been a victim on several misconceptions. What better time that this week to join in all the celebration and the raising our voice that comes with Woman’s Day in March and the upcoming performances we have, we decided to give you some Myth-Busting Reassurances if you’re wanting to own your womanhood and give belly dance a whirl.

So let’s clear some things up!

Five Most Common Belly Dance Myths

MYTH #1: Belly-Dance originated in harems, performed by women to entertain men.

Belly Dance was not invented to entertain men. In the past and in its countries of origin, men were not even allowed to watch. Women danced, and still, as a form of worshipping the sacred feminine.

Real belly dancing is family entertainment. It is a dance that children can do as well as older women.

Belly Dance

MYTH #2: Belly dancers must wear jewels in their navels.

The usage of belly rings (or navels) is not a Middle Eastern tradition but started in Hollywood during the 30’s as a form of censorship. Navels were too risque to show at the cinema back then!

MYTH #3: Only women can belly dance.

Contrary to what you may think, there are several male belly dancers, who are magnificent. Also, in its countries of origin, men still dance socially using movements that are reminiscent of belly dancing such as fluid arm movements and hip movements.

MYTH #4: Belly dancing is easy.

Belly dancing takes a lot of practice and discipline to learn. To become professional, it requires learning steps from Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, Turkey, among others. You will also need to learn the rhythms, the musicality, and cultural nuances, as well as a higher level of technique and presentation.

Don’t let myths dampen your plans to belly dance.

Dance 101: Samba basic steps and moves

Samba is a dance of joy, of vibration and pure color.

bella diva dance carnivaleSamba has been Rio de Janiero’s gift to the world. Brazilians are warm-blooded people full of energy and big smiles, and so is their dance, Samba is no exception to the magic. The Carnaval of Rio is the biggest samba event in the world, reproduced in many other places. This dance is now taught all around the world and many get to enjoy the pure energy of dancing Samba. Here are some basic steps and moves of Samba.

Basic Samba moves to get started

Feet: weight transfer

One of the important things is to follow the beat of the music. The basic feet movement involves transferring your weight from one foot to the other one on the beat. Keeping your knees slightly bent, with a toe-heel movement, keep the movement counting “one, two, three, four”.

Hip movement

Hip movement is key! As you move your feet, add a hip movement. When transferring the weight to the right, swing your hip to the right. Then do the same to the left. Make sure to engage your abs to keep in balance and get a core workout.

Arms to the sides

Move your arms opposite to your legs and swing them naturally and relaxed to the sides. Keep them waist high. Remember, the important thing is to keep the beat and smile!

Why workout regularly (if not daily)?

We can’t stop talking about how important exercise and working out is. Leaving aside the aesthetics and good condition that come along with staying active and healthy eating, exercise is necessary for our lives. There are so many benefits at so many levels that the lists can get quite lengthy.

Physicians and health professionals in all areas will always recommend it: exercise often, if not daily. It doesn’t matter if you haven’t done it before; this will change your life.

Benefits of working out regularly

1. Controls weight

Ok, we’re going to list this one first without focusing on the superficial side of it. It’s very basic, and it’s no secret or magic recipe, working out regularly and constantly will help that extra weight in your body to slowly and steadily start to go away. This will improve your overall health condition and prevent the risk of many diseases. So, it is critical that we watch our weight and try to stay as healthy as possible, not just for looks, but for a better life in every sense.

Undoubtedly, as we lose weight our self-esteem boosts and that acts as a positive reinforcement to persevere.

2. Keeps our body healthy

As we mentioned above, regular exercise will lead us on the healthy path, along with a nutritious diet, and plenty hydration, these 3 make the perfect trifecta. Plus, they will help you get a better good-night sleep and lower levels of stress. Heart disease can be prevented, blood pressure improved, which will increase the healthy cholesterol, HDL, and help the bad one go down. Some of the illnesses that can be prevented are type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, stroke, depression, certain types of cancer, arthritis, etc.

3. Maintains us emotionally, mentally and physically

When we’re active, we produce a neurotransmitter called serotonin, a known mood stabilizer. The number one natural antidepressant is exercise.

This process helps boost our energy, along with the benefits provided by cardiovascular exercise. Our energy levels go up, and every organ works better, including our brain. It’s all part of a perfect machine that works based on what fuel we give it.

Detox your body

We are the only ones responsible for our bodies and health. Make sure to exercise as often as possible and you’ll enjoy these great benefits! Read more about basic tips for women who want to be healthy and how world dance lessons are a great way to stay healthy.
