Expressing your feelings through Dance

Why Do People Dance?

Dance has been present in human culture and history for centuries. In its origins, it was meant to be used as a way of communication for ceremonial rites and celebrations, mostly. Nowadays, dance is not only available in theaters and shows, but also can be found in media, schools, and even in a flash mob at the mall. Dance is not limited to people who want to become professionals; anyone can learn to dance any of the many rhythms, variations and at any moment of our lives. Through dance, dancers can express feelings and emotions, conveying a message to the audience. Today, we share with you how dancing can be used as a way of expression and how people react to this manifestation.

Choreographing our feelings

According to choreographer, Diana F. Green, dance uses the body as an instrument. In her book, Choreographing from Within, body language can be exaggerated and abstracted in dance to project an infinite number of feelings, subtle moods, and emotions. Many choreographers, especially those rebelling against what they thought was the overly dramatic early modern movement, have ignored this side of choreography and embraced only the abstract craft of movement. Green emphasizes how important it is to recognize both sides of the spectrum and enjoy, as an audience or performer, both abstract and literal emotion based choreographic shows.

Choreography uses the human form, and an art form that is connected to the human form will tell a human story regardless of whether you intend to create a story. Audiences naturally read emotion and feeling when watching someone move on the stage. Many experimental studies have been performed to find the core elements of movements that communicate different emotions. Some have included brain scan studies that show the different areas of the brain that light up when people watch expressions of emotions. One of those studies was conducted in Edinburgh, in 2010, by Peter Lovatt.

persian

Recognizing Emotion from the Moving Body

Dance psychologist, Peter Lovatt, of the University of Hertfordshire, conducted an experiment to determine how people convey feelings through dance and how these were perceived by the audience. Through an exercise called “think-aloud-protocol”, people were asked to watch lots of different dance pieces, in a wide range of dance styles (e.g. contemporary, Indian Classical, ballet, and hip hop) and instructed them to say out-loud what they were thinking as they watched the pieces. They found out that even when people watched dance pieces that were not choreographed to explicitly express emotions people still tried to make sense of the pieces and would often say things like, “Oh yes, he obviously loves her, but she doesn’t want to be near him so she’s rejecting his advances”, or similar interpretations.

He continued his analysis by making an experiment with choreographers and dancers where they would each perform a specific feeling and then document what the audience perceived. Read the full article 23 Feelings in Dance. He concluded that it was certain that we can recognize emotions when they are expressed through the moving body and dance.

Try to leave your work worries at work, and to go to bed as light-minded as possible. Meditation, exercising, yoga, laughing and enjoying your favorite hobby will help you relieve stress. Your body will be forever grateful with good night sleep.

Healthy eating Food for the heart

6 No No Snacks that People Think are Healthy

Diets and SNACKING RIGHT

Few things in life happen without a plan; weight loss is no exception!

good foods that are not so goodLosing weight is definitely not an easy task. There are many things to consider when you’re planning to shed some pounds off your scale. Make sure to consult with a professional first, as extreme weight loss can drastically affect your health. Once you know your goal, get a diet and exercise plan to get you started. You will learn to start including new foods into your meal plans, as well as to getting rid of others.

Weight loss tip: snacking right

Snacking right tips are a trendy subject for one reason alone, most of us snack wrong. Even worse, many people just don’t snack. Snacks have had the worse reputation from ages. Surprise! Ages had it wrong… It’s important to include snacks into your diet, as it keeps your metabolism going and helps you control cravings.  So make sure to get healthy nutritional snacks and avoid the following list of no-nos. There are some that are very, very, very obvious. Those are not even on this list. We bring you the snacks to avoid that people may think are healthy…

Food and health tips

6 not-so-healthy snacks you should avoid

Trail mix

Really? Yes! Eating store-bought trail mix usually incurs in additional sugar and salt. The processed chocolate adds unwanted calories. Instead, try doing your own at home: get your favorite dried fruit and unsalted nuts. This is a great snack that will provide you with excellent nutrients.

Pretzels

But they have no fat… Fat or no fat, ingesting too much salt will increase the levels of sodium in your body, leading to water retention. Water retention can lead to bloating and puffiness. Pretzels are loaded with salt. The healthy alternative is switching to unsalted nuts like pistachios that contain more protein and fiber. Pretzels don’t actually add any nutritional value. They are just poorly spent calories.

Diet Soda

Don’t be fooled by the label, you know better than that! Even though most people go for diet sodas when in a diet, this is one of the most detrimental things you can do to your body. Artificial sweeteners are well-known to be negative to our health. Instead, drink sparkling water or create your own flavored water by adding cucumbers and whole fruits and using natural sweeteners like stevia.

Bottled Smoothie

You probably caught on quickly; the keyword to avoid is bottled. Virtually anything bottled will have more sugar than you expect. Make sure to read bottle labels as sometimes the calorie count is per serving, which is not the whole bottle. Make your own smoothies instead. This way you’ll know what you’re having and exactly how much to drink.

Granola

Not kidding. Even though granola is quickly associated to be a healthy snack, it is packed with sugar and fat calories. A half cup of granola with skim milk can have up to 360 calories. Instead, have whole oats or instant oats and add fruit or your favorite nuts to it. Again, make it at home and avoid the packaged stuff when possible.

100-calorie snack packs

Unhealthy in a snack pack. Yes, the whole 100 calories of it. Most of these products that are promoted as healthy just add more sugar and carbs into your body. Even though they might have only 100 calories, they usually don’t fill you up, so you end up eating two or more. Instead, switch for roasted pumpkin seeds or other nutritious natural snack that will have fewer calories and more of the good stuff.

Snacking is crucial to boosting your metabolism and keep your cravings under control. Learn how to make some healthy snacks to get ready to workout and for after an intense cardio dance class. Read more essential health tips for women.

HALLOWEEN IN DENVER Bella Diva

Here’s a video of last year’s Thriller performance to start getting your costumes out of the closet!

Till it happens to you: Violence against women

In the last month, Lady Gaga released one of her recent videos: “Till it happens to you” (a video that contains strong content, we recommend parents supervision). The video addresses a current common issue that can horrify any parent: rape and sexual assault in colleges. This is one of the many artists that uses her voice to speak up about issues that affect us all. Violence against women is a more common crime than what people usually think.

Violence against women is considered a gender based hate crime, pandemic even. According to former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, at least one out of every three women in the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or abused in her lifetime, with the abuser usually someone known to her. These are not isolated acts that only occur in poor communities where women are sexuality mutilated and experience brutality. Violence occurs in every country in the world.

Unite to End Violence Against Women

In 2008, the United Nations Secretary-General launched a campaign to put an end to this centuries old practice: Unite to End Violence Against Women. The campaign aims to raise public awareness and increase political will and resources for preventing and ending all forms of violence against women and girls in all parts of the world. The UNiTE campaign is working to mobilize individuals and communities. In addition to supporting the longstanding efforts of women’s and civil society organizations, the campaign is actively engaging with men, young people, celebrities, artists, sports personalities, private sector and many more. The current Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, states: “Break the silence. When you witness violence against women and girls, do not sit back. Act“.

One Billion Rising dance flash mob in Denver

One Billion Rising Revolution

Another campaign that is trying to increase awareness and displays public manifestations is One Billion Rising Revolution organization. One Billion Rising Campaign is the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history. The campaign, launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. On 14 February 2013, people across the world came together to express their outrage, strike, dance, and RISE in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women. On 14 February 2015, millions of activists in over 200 countries gathered to Rise for REVOLUTION.

It’s essential that women, girls, boys and men unite in one voice and support campaigns like these. Take action by sharing information on social networks and making donations. Don’t be indifferent.
